Legal sports betting is the rule now, not the exception.

As of July 2026, statewide online sports betting is live in 32 jurisdictions including Washington, D.C. Another eight states allow sports betting only at retail locations, and eleven have no legal market at all. Missouri joined most recently, with online wagering launching December 1, 2025. The holdouts still include California, Texas, Georgia and Minnesota.

How to read this market

Sports betting legality is not casino legality.

A state that allows online sportsbooks does not automatically allow online casinos. Only a small group of states regulate both. Check your state page for the full picture before assuming an operator's casino tab is legal where you live.

  • Each state licenses operators separately. A sportsbook live in 25 states is still illegal in the rest.
  • Verify a license on the state regulator's published operator list, linked from every one of our state pages.
  • Offers differ by state, and some states restrict promo language or credits. The offer you see advertised may not be the offer in your state.

Quick answers

Common sportsbook questions.

Which states still have no online sports betting?

As of July 2026 the notable holdouts are California, Texas, Georgia, Minnesota, Alabama, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. Several run ballot or legislative efforts most years, so this list keeps shrinking.

Is betting on an offshore sportsbook the same thing?

No. Offshore books are not licensed by any US state regulator, which means no state-backed dispute process and no local consumer protections. This page lists state-licensed operators only.

Can I use a sportsbook while visiting another state?

Usually yes. Legal betting depends on where you are physically located when you place the bet, verified by geolocation, not on where you live.
